In-home Safety

The room where the most falls take place is the bathroom. It is also one of the easiest places to make additions that will allow you to be safer. A grab bar can be added to the tub or shower wall to provide additional support getting in and out. The wall next to the shower/tub is another ideal location to add a grab bar to increase safety. All-Star Medical also carries a bathtub grab bar safety rail that easily mounts to your tub making getting in and out a breeze.

Maybe standing in the shower is too taxing but you can’t afford to install a new sit in shower like you see on TV. All-Star Medical has a number of barrier free shower stalls and a Cleancut Step tub that can replace your existing tub or shower. We also carry a portable roll in shower, shower chairs and transfer benches to make bathing easier.

Living independently in your home can be hindered if you have trouble navigating stairs. They can be a hazard and pose an elevated fall risk if you have trouble with balance, but we have a solution for that. All-Star Medical has stair lifts to fit every location in your home. We also carry platform lifts that can be installed in place of stairs in locations like the garage.  

Any time you change positions, from standing to sitting or from one seat to another you risk a fall. To make these transitions easier and safer you can use a transfer board. There are used for transferring people between chairs, beds, wheelchairs and any other device. It alleviates the need to stand fully. To use in addition with the transfer board, or with any transfer, a gait belt provides a secure hand hold to assist the person changing positions.

Lift chairs are a great alternative when it comes to independent mobility. Models that feature a full range of motion can stand you up then move you into a comfortable seated or reclining position. These chairs take the strain out of getting up and down and can offer you further safety in your independence.

Transferring in and out of bed is another scenario where one may be at a high risk for a fall. We carry the Upbed which, like a lift chair, stands you up so that you can get out of bed more easily. We also carry overbed tables that can hold your meals and other items and easily roll back and forth. This can minimize the need to get up and down or to reach for a nightstand, greatly reducing the risk of a nighttime fall.

Safer Mobility

Now that we have covered increasing the safety of your home, preventing falls in the community should be next. You can’t control your surroundings, but you can control how you interact with them. Based on your level of balance and confidence you can access the community using a rollator. 

For those who are more secure with their balance a rollator may be the solution to community safety. Rollators are three or four-wheeled framed walkers that offer support to the user while allowing them the speed to freely move around the community. Rollators come with hand breaks and the four wheeled models typically have seats. The front wheel(s) move freely and allow the user to navigate tight turns easily.
