A mobility scooter can significantly impact a person’s ability to live independently, work in different jobs, and have fun with family and friends. Choosing the right mobility scooter can be a challenge since there are so many options and features for these valuable medical devices.

One of the biggest differences between mobility scooters is whether they are foldable, portable, or stationary. Learning about the pros and cons of each type, folding vs. non-folding scooters, can help you make the best decision for you or a loved one who needs a scooter. If you have questions about the features of each one All-Star Medical offers, our friendly customer care team is ready to help!

Benefits and Drawbacks to Consider of Foldable and Non-Foldable Scooters

We’re looking at several important considerations for purchasing a mobility scooter to help you decide which is right for your needs. Ultimately, mobility scooters are intended to increase your mobility and independence, and help frail seniors or people with disabilities or limited mobility have more opportunities to go places on their own. Both types of scooters, non-foldable and foldable, can vary in design and structure; some have more “extras” than others. This provides a much greater degree of individualized choice for the user.

Portability and Weight

A foldable mobility scooter is very portable. Folded scooters may be placed in the trunk or back of a vehicle, allowing someone to travel in a car and then get the scooter out when they arrive at their destination. If you wish to travel by air or train, your scooter can come along with you, so you don’t need to make arrangements for a rental scooter at your destination.

Scooters that disassemble or come apart are a great option. You still have the ability to travel but by taking the scooter apart, the heaviest piece is now lighter than the folding versions. These mobility scooters still work very well when you need to travel.

Mid Range scooters, on the other hand, require a vehicle lift or larger space to transport and you will sometimes need a portable ramp. In most cases the non-folding scooters have a higher weight capacity of up to 400-500 lbs. These devices weigh upwards of 150-250 lbs.

Storage of the Scooter

Space for your durable medical equipment may be a big consideration for many people, especially those who live in an assisted living facility or nursing home and only have a small room or apartment to keep their belongings. Foldable mobility scooters can easily be stored near one’s bed or, if you need the scooter for work, can be stored in a small office space. Mid Range Scooters, on the other hand, can take up quite a bit of room, which may be a consideration for some people

Cost of the Scooter

The cost of durable medical equipment is a big consideration for many people. Portable mobility scooters tend to cost less than the foldable option. Users must weigh the difference between the convenience of a foldable scooter against the fact that the deluxe models may cost considerably more than a portable option.

Which Type of Scooter is Right for You?

When you need a mobility scooter, you must consider all your options and the extent of your need. If having a scooter makes the difference between being able to leave your home and work or going out and not being able to leave, you may wish to invest more in something you will use frequently. If you don’t mind needing more space to store the scooter, and the cost is a big consideration, then a mid range scooter option may work better. If you are still unsure, check out all the choices from All-Star Medical’s online inventory or stop in to one of our two locations to try out the different models personally!
