Traveling by air can be stressful enough without wondering whether your mobility scooter will make the trip with you. Fortunately, the answer is yes—most mobility scooters can travel on commercial airlines. However, there are important rules regarding batteries, weight, and airline procedures that every traveler should know before arriving at the airport.

Taking a few minutes to prepare before your trip can help you avoid delays, protect your equipment, and make your travel experience much smoother.

Can You Fly With a Mobility Scooter?

Yes. Under the Air Carrier Access Act, airlines must accommodate passengers who use mobility devices, including mobility scooters.

Most airlines transport mobility scooters free of charge in addition to your regular checked baggage allowance. Your scooter is typically checked at the gate, allowing you to use it throughout the airport until it’s time to board.

If you’re planning to travel frequently, All Star Medical offers a variety of travel mobility scooters designed to disassemble easily and simplify air travel.

Battery Type Matters

One of the first questions an airline may ask is what type of battery your scooter uses.

Most mobility scooters are equipped with either:

  • Sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries
  • Gel batteries
  • AGM batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries

Each type has different transportation requirements.

Lithium batteries, in particular, are subject to additional federal regulations because of their energy capacity. If your scooter uses lithium batteries, it’s a good idea to know the battery’s watt-hour (Wh) rating before your trip.

The Transportation Security Administration’s guidance on battery-powered wheelchairs and mobility devices explains how mobility scooters are screened, battery requirements, and what passengers should discuss with their airline before traveling.

Contact Your Airline Before You Fly

Even though airlines regularly transport mobility scooters, every airline has its own procedures.

Before your departure:

  • Notify the airline that you’ll be traveling with a mobility scooter.
  • Ask whether they’ll need the make and model.
  • Confirm battery requirements.
  • Ask about weight limitations.
  • Request wheelchair assistance if needed.

Calling a few days before your flight gives the airline time to prepare and reduces surprises at the airport.

Prepare Your Scooter for Travel

A little preparation goes a long way toward protecting your scooter.

Before leaving home:

  • Fully charge the batteries.
  • Remove personal belongings from baskets or storage compartments.
  • Bring your charger if you’ll need it at your destination.
  • Take photos of your scooter before checking it.
  • Label the scooter with your name and contact information.

Many experienced travelers also carry a copy of the owner’s manual or battery specifications in case airline personnel have questions.

What Happens at the Airport?

In most cases, you’ll ride your scooter through security and continue using it until you reach the aircraft door.

At that point, airline personnel will transport it to the cargo compartment while you board using the assistance you’ve requested.

When you arrive, your scooter is usually returned either at the aircraft door or at the designated oversized baggage area, depending on the airport and airline.

Protecting Your Scooter During Transit

Although airlines handle thousands of mobility devices every year, accidents can happen.

One recommendation we often make is to remove any accessories that can easily be detached, such as:

  • Cup holders
  • Phone mounts
  • Oxygen tank holders
  • Storage bags
  • Seat cushions (if removable)

Taking a few minutes to remove these items can help prevent unnecessary damage during loading.

Is a Travel Scooter Better for Flying?

That depends on how you travel.

If you fly several times a year, a lightweight travel scooter offers several advantages:

  • Easier transportation
  • Simpler storage
  • Faster disassembly
  • Lighter overall weight

For travelers who primarily use their scooter around home but only fly occasionally, a full-size scooter may still be the better long-term choice.

If you’re unsure which option best fits your lifestyle, visiting our Hermitage showroom or Brentwood showroom gives you the opportunity to compare several models before making a decision.

Quick Tips Before Your Flight

  • Contact your airline several days before departure.
  • Know your battery type.
  • Charge the scooter before traveling.
  • Remove loose accessories.
  • Photograph your scooter before checking it.
  • Arrive at the airport a little earlier than usual.

A Question We Hear Often

Will my mobility scooter count as checked baggage?

No. Mobility scooters are considered assistive devices and generally do not count toward your normal checked baggage allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I ride my mobility scooter through airport security?

Yes. In most cases, you’ll remain on your scooter until TSA completes the screening process.

Can lithium batteries fly on an airplane?

Yes, but additional requirements may apply depending on the battery’s watt-hour rating. Check with your airline before traveling.

What if my scooter is damaged during the flight?

Report any damage to the airline before leaving the airport and take photos immediately. Prompt reporting helps speed up the claims process.

Travel With Confidence

Flying with a mobility scooter doesn’t have to be intimidating. A little planning before your trip can help you navigate airline policies, protect your equipment, and arrive at your destination with confidence.
